Why this page exists

Around 6,600 people a month search some version of “free edu email for cursor”. Nearly every article answering that query was written between mid-2025 and early 2026, and describes a programme that Cursor has since shut down. Several still walk you step by step through obtaining an address you are not entitled to.

This article does two things instead: it establishes what is actually true as of today from primary sources, and it lists what a student can genuinely get without paying. If you are here because you want Cursor and cannot afford $20 a month, skip to the alternatives — there are real ones, and one of them is better value than what Cursor used to offer.

What was the Cursor student discount?

From May 2025, Cursor offered verified students twelve months of Cursor Pro at no cost. At the standard $20 a month, that was $240 of software given away per student. Verification ran through SheerID, the third-party service that also handles student verification for Google, Spotify and dozens of others.

It was, briefly, one of the most generous developer-tool offers available to students anywhere.

When did Cursor end the student discount?

25 June 2026. Cursor’s help centre states it plainly, and gives the reason: the programme had become a target for fraud and was holding the company back from reaching students globally.

Read that reason carefully, because it is the whole answer to the question you searched. The abuse of .edu addresses is not a loophole that survived. It is the thing that killed the offer.

Checked today We fetched cursor.com/students on 16 September 2026. The page no longer mentions a discount at all. Its FAQ answer to “Does Cursor offer discounts to students?” begins: “Anyone can get started with Cursor for free.” It then points to campus events. There is no verification flow, no SheerID widget and no .edu field on the page.

If you already have the student discount, do you keep it?

Yes. Cursor’s help centre confirms that anyone who redeemed before the cut-off keeps their rate until the plan expires.

One thing to diary, though: when the free year ends, the subscription continues at the regular $20 a month unless you cancel. It does not lapse back to the free tier on its own. If you claimed yours in, say, March 2026, set a reminder for March 2027.

Does a free .edu email work for Cursor?

No, and it is worth being precise about why, because the reasoning applies to every other student offer you will try next.

Two separate things have to be true for a fake address to work. First, there has to be an offer to claim. There isn’t — that is settled above. Second, the verification would have to be checking the email domain. It never was.

The email address is where verification starts, not what it checks.

The email address is where verification starts, not what it checks.

SheerID and services like it query registrar and enrolment databases for a currently-enrolled student record matching the person applying. The address you type is a hint about which institution to query. If no matching enrolment record comes back, the check fails or escalates to manual review, where a human asks for a dated student ID, a transcript or a tuition receipt.

This is why the “just get a .edu” advice was always shakier than it looked, even while the programme existed. A dormant address at an institution with no matching live enrolment record fails the same check as no address at all. What actually worked for fraudsters at scale was compromised or resold accounts belonging to real enrolled students — which is identity misuse, not a clever trick.

What happens if you try anyway

Cursor tightened its Acceptable Use Policy on 11 August 2026, seven weeks after closing the programme. The current version adds language that covers exactly this territory.

Three separate clauses in Cursor's current terms cover obtaining service without paying.

Three separate clauses in Cursor’s current terms cover obtaining service without paying.

The policy bars exploiting account provisioning workflows to avoid or reduce fees, obtain unauthorised credits, or otherwise receive the service without paying. A separate clause bars falsifying, forging or materially misrepresenting documents, records, identities and credentials. The consequence the policy names is action against the account, up to suspension or termination.

There is a third angle people arrive at after the first two fail: buying a discounted Cursor account from a reseller. Cursor’s own pricing FAQ addresses this directly. Subscriptions are sold only through cursor.com; the company authorises no resellers, says accounts obtained elsewhere may have been sourced through abuse of its systems, and reserves the right to suspend or terminate them at any time.

The practical read: you would be paying a stranger for an account that can vanish, with no recourse, while handing that stranger your email address and payment details. The failure mode isn’t a slap on the wrist. It’s losing both the money and the work stored against that account.

What Cursor costs now

For reference, here is the full price list as it stands, read straight off the pricing page today.

Yearly billing saves 20%, which brings Pro to roughly $192 a year. That is the real number to compare any alternative against.

What students can get from Cursor today

Cursor did not abandon students; it moved them off a self-serve verification flow and onto channels that are harder to game.

  • Hobby tier. Free, no credit card, limited agent requests, Composer access. This is the answer Cursor’s own FAQ gives students now.
  • Campus and online events. Undergraduates can claim credits and discounts at Cursor events starting this autumn. There is a campus newsletter that announces them.
  • Credits request form. Master’s students, PhD candidates, academic researchers and educators can request credits directly through a form on Cursor’s help centre.

That last one is underused. If you are a postgraduate or a researcher, it is a written request rather than an automated check, and it costs you ten minutes. It is strictly the highest-expected-value option on this page for anyone eligible.

What actually works for students right now

If the goal is AI coding assistance without paying, rather than Cursor specifically, the picture is better than it looks.

Every offer here verifies enrolment properly. None of them need a purchased address.

GitHub Student Developer Pack

The strongest remaining option, and the closest substitute for what Cursor used to give away. Verified students get GitHub Copilot Pro free alongside GitHub Pro, a JetBrains all-products licence, cloud credits and a long tail of other tools. Verification accepts a school email or a dated student ID with your name and the current date visible.

Copilot is not Cursor, but the gap is narrower than it was. We put the two side by side in Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot — and one finding there matters here: the paid Copilot tiers now include access to third-party agents, which changes the value calculation considerably.

Google’s student offer

US college students aged 18 to 24 can claim twelve months of Google AI Pro, normally $19.99 a month. Students outside the US get twelve months of Google AI Plus, normally $4.99 a month. Both verify enrolment through SheerID, and the offer is redeemable until 31 December 2026.

Two conditions worth reading before you sign up: it requires a payment method at registration, and it auto-renews at full price when the year ends unless you cancel. Eligibility also has to be re-verified annually.

Run models on your own machine, free and unmetered

No verification, no expiry, no subscription. If you have a reasonable GPU or an Apple Silicon machine, local models handle a large share of everyday coding work at zero marginal cost. Start with our guide to running LLMs locally, then check what actually fits in 32GB — the quantisation maths there is measured from real file sizes, and the answers surprise most people.

For a chat interface over those models, our Open WebUI guide covers the full setup.

Free tiers of the CLI coding agents

Several terminal-based agents have usable free or low-cost entry points. Installing Claude Code and installing Codex CLI both take a few minutes, and they sit alongside whatever editor you already use rather than replacing it.

Anthropic’s student pricing is a separate question with a different answer — we cover it in the Claude student discount guide, and the full plan breakdown is in Claude pricing plans.

The honest summary

You searched for a free .edu email to get Cursor. The finding is that the door it opened was closed in June, and closed specifically because too many people were doing exactly that.

The consolation is that the best remaining offer — the GitHub Student Developer Pack — bundles Copilot Pro with a JetBrains licence and a stack of other tools, and it is still open. It takes a genuine enrolment check and about five minutes. That is a better outcome than the one you came here looking for, and it does not put an account you depend on at risk.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Cursor student discount still available in 2026?

No. Cursor discontinued new sign-ups on 25 June 2026. The student page now directs students to campus events and the free Hobby tier instead.

Why did Cursor cancel the student discount?

Cursor’s help centre says the programme had become a target for fraud and was holding the company back from reaching students globally.

Can I still use a .edu email to get Cursor Pro free?

No. There is no offer left to redeem. While the programme ran, verification checked enrolment records rather than the email domain, so a purchased or generated address would not have passed on its own.

I redeemed the discount before it ended. What happens now?

You keep your rate until the plan expires. After that the subscription continues at $20 a month unless you cancel first.

Is there any free version of Cursor?

Yes. The Hobby tier is free, needs no credit card, and includes limited agent requests and Composer access.

What is the best free alternative for students?

The GitHub Student Developer Pack, which includes Copilot Pro free for verified students along with GitHub Pro, JetBrains and cloud credits.

Can I buy a cheap Cursor account from a reseller?

Cursor’s pricing FAQ says subscriptions are sold only through cursor.com, that it authorises no resellers, and that accounts obtained elsewhere may be suspended or terminated at any time.

Do postgraduates have a separate route?

Yes. Master’s students, PhD candidates, researchers and educators can request credits through a form linked from Cursor’s help centre. It is a written request rather than an automated check.
