- There is no Claude student discount. Anthropic's help centre states it does "not offer standard discounted pricing" on any of its paid plans, and that includes Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x. There is no .edu rate, no verified-student tier and no student promo code. Claude is only free for a student in one situation — your university has bought a Claude for Education plan and issued you a seat. The cheapest price anyone pays, student or not, is $200 a year for Pro on annual billing, which is $40 less than paying monthly.
That is the answer for about 90% of people who search this. But the full picture is more useful than the headline, because there are four official Anthropic education programmes, one of them gives away Claude Code free for a year, and there is a way to run Claude Code with no subscription at all. This guide covers every legitimate route, what each one actually requires, the deadlines that expire this term, and what to use instead when none of them apply to you.
Anthropic says it in writing: no discounts
Most “Claude student discount” pages hedge. Anthropic doesn’t. In the help centre article describing the Max plan, the company states plainly that it does not offer standard discounted pricing on any of its paid plans, including Max 5x and Max 20x. The only carve-out it mentions is occasional limited-time promotions announced through official channels — not a standing student rate.
This matters more than it sounds, because it rules out an entire category of thing people go looking for:
- No student pricing page and no Claude Pro student discount
- No SheerID or UNiDAYS verification flow for individuals
- No .edu email discount and no Claude AI discount for students
- No student promo code, ever
- No free trial of Pro, Max or Claude premium features
- No Claude Code student discount — Claude Code is bundled into Pro and Max at full price
Every competitor in this space runs a verified-student programme. Anthropic runs education programmes instead, and they are institutional. That is the single design decision that explains everything else in this guide.
Anthropic does discount — just not for education
This is the detail that makes the policy legible. Anthropic runs Claude for Nonprofits, with Team seats at $8 per user per month and Enterprise seats at $10, verified through Goodstack in a couple of minutes. Eligibility covers 501(c)(3) organisations, K-12 schools and qualifying healthcare organisations — and the policy explicitly excludes higher education institutions, along with government agencies and political campaigns.
So a discount programme exists, it is generous, and universities are named as ineligible for it. Higher education is routed to the paid Claude for Education plan instead. If you are a student wondering whether you have missed a hidden Claude discount for students, this is your answer: the discount that exists was deliberately pointed somewhere else.
What Claude actually costs a student in 2026
The prices below are identical whether you are a first-year CS undergraduate or a staff engineer at a bank.

Two details worth internalising:
The annual/monthly gap is the only discount that exists. Anthropic’s pricing page shows Pro as $17/month billed annually; the help centre lists the annual charge as $200. Either way you save roughly $40 a year over the $20 monthly rate. That is your student discount, and it is available to everyone.
Max has no annual option. Both Max tiers are monthly-only, so there is no way to reduce them. What the free plan actually gives you
Before you spend anything, know what $0 buys, because Claude AI for students starts here whether or not you ever upgrade.
Anthropic does not publish a fixed number of free messages per day, and any page quoting you an exact figure is guessing. The Free plan works on a rolling window that resets roughly every five hours, and how many questions you can ask Claude for free inside that window depends on how long your messages are, how much you have attached, and how busy the service is. Long conversations with large files attached burn the allowance far faster than short questions, because the whole thread is re-read on every turn.
What that means in practice for a student: the free message limit is generous enough for reading and explaining code, planning an assignment or debugging a stack trace, and it will stop you mid-flow if you try to hold a 2,000-line file in context all afternoon. It does not include Claude Code at any usage level.
Is Claude free for students? Only through your university
The one route that makes Claude genuinely free for a student is Claude for Education: a campus-wide plan a university buys for its students, faculty and staff. Northeastern University, the London School of Economics and Champlain College were the launch partners, with Northeastern rolling it out across roughly 50,000 students, faculty and staff on 13 global campuses.
If your institution has one, you get a university-sponsored Claude account through single sign-on, and you pay nothing personally.
How to find out whether your campus has it
Anthropic does not publish a searchable list of participating institutions, and support tells students to check with their own university. In practice, in order of speed:
- Try signing in at claude.ai with your university email and look for an SSO redirect to your institution’s login page.
- Search your university IT portal or service catalogue for “Claude” or “Anthropic”.
- Ask your department — CS and business schools tend to know before central IT announces anything.
- Ask your students’ union or a campus AI club; if there is a Claude Builder Club on campus, they will know.
Learning Mode, and why it is not a downgrade
Claude for Education ships Learning Mode, which changes Claude’s default behaviour from answering to questioning — asking “how would you approach this problem?” and working through your reasoning with Socratic prompting instead of returning finished code.
Students often assume this is a crippled Claude. It is not a different model, and for coursework it is arguably the better default. If you are using it for a project rather than a problem set, you can work outside it.
Before you switch accounts, export your chats
Anthropic’s support documentation is explicit that you cannot migrate data between accounts — you export from the old one and upload the conversation JSON into the new one. The four official Anthropic education programmes
“Free Claude” is not one thing. It is four separate programmes with four different eligibility gates, and three of them are not open to an individual student acting alone.
1. Claude for Education — the university buys it, you get a seat. Free to you, if your campus participates.
2. Claude for Teachers — free for a full year for individually verified K-12 educators in the United States, and it includes Claude Code and Cowork. Sign up by 30 June 2027. This is the most generous individual offer Anthropic runs, and it is closed to students and to university faculty.
3. Claude Campus — Builder Clubs and Campus Ambassadors. Run an AI builder organisation at your university and you get API credits for members, Anthropic speakers for workshops, hackathon and demo-night support, and a paid programme stipend. It runs in cohorts; the Spring 2026 round is in session and applications are closed, with future rounds announced on the programme page.
4. Student builder API credits — Anthropic grants API credits to students building real projects, through the Campus programme intake. These are API credits, not a subscription, which matters: they work in Claude Code through an API key login. More on that below.
There is also a route almost nobody searching for a discount knows about: Anthropic’s partnership with CodePath, which puts Claude and Claude Code inside CodePath’s AI engineering courses. CodePath serves 20,000+ students, over 40% from families earning under $50,000 a year, concentrated in community colleges, state schools and HBCUs. If you are eligible for CodePath, that is a free path to Claude Code inside a structured course.
Is there a Claude Code student plan or free trial?
No, to both. This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in the whole topic, so it is worth being precise.
Claude Code is not on the Free plan. You can install the CLI without paying — installation has never been the gate. But authenticating with a Claude account requires an active Pro or Max subscription. Anthropic’s support documentation puts it directly: with Pro and Max you get Claude on web, desktop and mobile and Claude Code in your terminal under one subscription. The Free plan is not in that sentence.
There is no Claude Code trial. Searches for “claude code trial” and “claude code free trial” have real volume and no product behind them. Anthropic does not run a time-limited trial of Pro or Max.
Shared and resold accounts are a trap. “Group buy” Max seats and resold logins violate Anthropic’s terms, and when the account is shut down mid-semester your chat history goes with it.

The API-key route: Claude Code with no subscription
This is the workaround most students never find, and it is entirely legitimate.
Claude Code authenticates either with a subscription login or with an Anthropic Console API key. With an API key there is no quota and no monthly fee — you pay per token, billed against prepaid credit. For a student doing a few focused sessions a week rather than all-day agentic work, this is usually cheaper than $17/month, and it has a property a subscription doesn’t: a hard spend ceiling you control.
How it works in practice:
- Create an organisation in the Anthropic Console and add billing.
- Buy a small amount of prepaid credit rather than leaving auto-reload on.
- Generate an API key and authenticate Claude Code with it.
- Use /cost rather than /usage inside Claude Code — API accounts have no quota to report, only a bill.

The trade-off is real: API pricing means a runaway agentic session costs real money, where a subscription just stops. Set a low credit balance until you know your own burn rate, and choose your model deliberately — the benchmark data on which Claude model is actually best for coding matters a lot more when you are paying per token than when you are on a flat plan.
What every other AI coding tool gives students
Here is the uncomfortable comparison. Anthropic is the only major vendor in this category with no individual student offer at all.
GitHub Copilot remains free for verified students through the Student Developer Pack, now as a dedicated “Copilot Student” plan. Two changes from 2026 you should know: since March, Claude Opus and Sonnet, GPT-5.3-Codex and GPT-5.4 were removed from direct model selection on the student plan and are reachable only through Auto mode; and since 1 June the plan includes 200 monthly AI credits alongside unlimited code completions. Students can now also upgrade to paid Copilot Pro while keeping the rest of their Student Pack benefits.
Google AI Pro is free for 12 months for eligible US college students, with Google AI Plus offered instead across 140+ markets outside the US (excluding Bolivia, Albania, Canada, Macau, Hong Kong and Tunisia). Redemption closes 31 December 2026. For students outside the United States this is realistically the most valuable free AI offer available right now — though it is worth knowing what Gemini will and won’t let you change before you make it your main tool.
ChatGPT Plus runs a Back to School offer of four free monthly billing periods, US only, claim by 31 October 2026. A payment method is required and it converts to $20/month unless you cancel. App-store-billed subscriptions are not eligible.
Cursor’s widely-shared free-Pro-year student programme is no longer running. The students page now points to the standard free tier plus promotions at on-campus and online events.
The deadlines that expire this term
Note what is missing from that timeline: Claude has no student deadline, because it has nothing to claim.
How student verification works (and why .edu isn’t enough)
Every offer above except Claude’s runs through third-party verification, usually SheerID. Understanding the flow is the difference between a five-second approval and a week of failed attempts.
The failure modes are predictable:
- Claiming on the wrong account. Start the offer while signed into the account you actually want upgraded. Switching afterwards is usually impossible.
- Using a nickname. The record check matches your legal name against registrar data. “Abdul” instead of “Abdullah” fails.
- Assuming your .edu address is proof. SheerID has publicly argued that .edu email is no longer sufficient on its own — addresses persist long after graduation and are widely resold. Expect a record match or an SSO login, not just an email check.
- Uploading an undated document. The fallback upload needs your name, your institution and the current term visible in one image.
Fake “Claude student discount codes” and why they rank
Because no official student rate exists, the keyword has been colonised. Search it and you will get pages of coupon farms listing codes that never worked.
A simple test: Anthropic issues no public promotional codes for Pro or Max. Any page presenting one is generating affiliate clicks. Two categories are worse than useless:
- Account resellers and “group buys.” Sharing or reselling seat access breaks Anthropic’s terms. The account gets shut down, usually at the worst possible moment in a semester, and your conversation history goes with it.
- Anything asking you to log in to “verify student status” for Claude. There is no student verification flow for Claude. A page offering one is phishing.
The $0 stack when none of this applies to you
If you are a student outside the US, at a university with no Education plan, who cannot justify $200 a year — this is what I would actually run. It gets most of the work done at zero cost and reserves paid tokens for the jobs that need a frontier model.
Chat and reasoning — Claude Free. Limited, resets on a rolling five-hour window, and perfectly good for planning, debugging explanations and reading unfamiliar code.
Autocomplete — GitHub Copilot Student. Free, global, unlimited completions. The one genuinely free tool on this list that works everywhere.
Local models — Ollama or LM Studio. Unlimited, offline, private, and good enough for a large share of everyday coding now. Free hosted models — OpenRouter’s free tier for anything too large to hold in your laptop’s memory.
Agentic coding — Claude Code on an API key, used deliberately. A handful of dollars a month, with a ceiling you set.

What I would do, by situation
US undergraduate, no campus Education plan. Claim Google AI Pro before 31 December 2026 and GitHub Copilot Student today — both free. Add Claude Pro on annual billing only if you hit a wall the free tools can’t get you past.
Student outside the US. Google AI Plus is your best free option in 140+ markets. GitHub Copilot Student is global and free. For Claude specifically, an API key is more sensible than a subscription until your usage is predictable.
CS student doing serious agentic work. Pro on annual billing at $200/year, and run local models for the routine 80%. Skip Max — at university workloads you are paying $80 a month for headroom you will rarely reach.
Your university has Claude for Education. Use the SSO seat. Export your personal chats first.
You are a US K-12 teacher. Claude for Teachers, free for a year including Claude Code, sign up by 30 June 2027. Nothing else on this page beats it.
